Paducah Bank has been outwardly asking this question, and we’ve been very gratified with many meaningful responses. One such reply came from Dean Carpenter during our Proud Essay contest in 2010.
We asked the question on our Facebook page, “What have you done today to make you feel proud?” The winning response was to be awarded $500 for the charity of the person’s choice. Dean Carpenter’s essay is printed here. In honor of Dean’s outpouring of care and support to a member of the River City Mission, Paducah Bank provided Christmas gifts to children living at the Mission. The bank also gave $500 in gift certificates from Sears and SuperValu to the gentleman Dean has now hired as his building superintendent.
My wife and I own and manage rental property here in Paducah and as such we need repair work done occasionally. I do much of the work myself but constantly need help. This is how I happened to meet a man who was living at The River City Mission here in Paducah.
He would help me with odd jobs, and this is how I learned his story. An Army Ranger, he served our country in Vietnam. Also a throat cancer survivor, he beat a grim prognosis with the subsequent required surgery and treatments.
Through this battle with cancer, he pretty much lost everything materially that he had worked for in his life, and this is how he ended up at the Mission after recovering from his surgery.
He would do odd jobs for me, and as we worked together, we became good friends. He no longer lives in the Mission but stays in one of our buildings as the building superintendent. He has a home and a purpose and is rebuilding his life. This is what makes me proud, to be a part of someone’s life and to feel that it has made a difference. It doesn’t get any better than that.
