Seven Ways to Avoid Fraud in Payment Apps

Mobile payment apps such as Venmo, PayPal, Zelle and others are now a part of our everyday lives. However, these systems do not come without risk. Use of these payment systems is essentially the equivalent of you handing someone cash. Consider these tips to avoid being the subject of fraudulent activity:

1. Be Wary of Contacts.
Customers should be wary of any unsolicited calls, e-mails and text messages. If a “friend” or “family member” requests payment via one of these apps, make sure it is a bona fide request before payment.

2. Avoid Suspicious Links.
Many fraudsters will send you a link to send money to a “friend” or “family member.” Never click on these links. Always go directly to the website if you need to make a legitimate payment.

3. Use Multi-Factor Authentication.
Most mobile payment systems offer multi-factor authentication. This means utilizing multiple credentials to access your account. While you may think this extra step creates unnecessary burdens to access your account, it provides an extra layer of security that can protect your money!

4. Never Share Your Credentials!
While you may trust someone, never share your credentials with anyone. This can lead to unauthorized transfers.

5. Use Payment Alerts.
Most apps offer alerts to receive transaction notifications outside of the app via text or email. These alerts can help you identify fraud quickly and possibly save your money from being stolen!

6. Check Your Credentials!
Regularly check your payment app and banks accounts to make sure all of the payments from your accounts were authorized. Being diligent will protect your money!

7. If it Sounds Suspicious. Be Suspicious!
If a transaction seems suspicious, it probably is.
